Data Deletion Instructions
How to Request Deletion of Your Data
At General Consensus, we respect your privacy and your right to control your personal data. This page explains how to request deletion of your account and associated data.
How to Delete Your Account
You can delete your General Consensus account in two ways:
Option 1: Self-Service Deletion (When Logged In)
- Log into your General Consensus account
- Navigate to My Account → Profile
- Scroll to the bottom of the page
- Click the "Delete Account" button
- Confirm your decision when prompted
Option 2: Email Request
If you cannot access your account or prefer email, send a deletion request to:
Email: privacy@generalconsensus.org
Please include:
- The email address associated with your account
- Your username (if known)
- Subject line: "Data Deletion Request"
What Data Will Be Deleted
When you delete your account, the following data will be permanently removed:
- Account Information - Username, email address, password
- Profile Data - Avatar, bio, preferences
- Authentication Data - Social login connections (Google, Facebook)
- Personal Information - Name, birth date, gender, country/region
- Activity History - Login history, session data
- Submissions - Items you submitted to the platform
- Reports - Any reports you filed
What Data Will Be Retained (Anonymized)
To maintain the integrity of our statistical data and platform functionality, certain data will be anonymized (disconnected from your identity) rather than deleted:
- Votes - Your votes remain in our database for statistical accuracy, but are no longer linked to you
- Aggregate Statistics - Demographic breakdowns (e.g., "Males aged 25-34") that include your anonymized data
Why we retain anonymized voting data: Our platform's value comes from accurate, long-term statistics. If every deleted account removed its votes, our data would become unreliable. By anonymizing rather than deleting votes, we respect your privacy while maintaining data integrity.
Processing Timeline
- Self-Service Deletion: Immediate (account deleted within seconds)
- Email Requests: Processed within 30 days of receipt
After Deletion
Once your account is deleted:
- You will be immediately logged out
- You cannot log in again with the deleted account credentials
- Your username becomes available for others to use
- You can create a new account with the same email address if desired
- There is no recovery period - deletion is permanent
